But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises. For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.
Hebrews 8:6-7, 13
There are two key covenants in scripture that relate to us in terms of salvation. The covenant made with Moses (Ex 24) in the Old Testament, was made that the people may abide by the law and make restitution for sin through offerings. They were unable to be faithful to this covenant, however, and therefore, a new covenant was to be established on better promises (v6). This new covenant in Christ Jesus is the ‘once and for all’ atonement for sin, willingly given, and completely blameless. It cost God everything.
This blows my mind. I think if I were God, I would have lost patience with humanity long ago. I love the saying ‘Grace is not free; it just didn’t cost us anything’. God not only doesn’t do away with us, but he seeks to correct and redeem himself the separation that we created. That is a God I want to spend my life getting to know- giving my life in surrender to the one who gave it all for me.
God, you are pure love. Forgive me for the fact that I take you for granted and sin against you. Help me to continually submit my heart to you, so that the fullness of our relationship that you want with me may be realised.
