. 21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as He was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with You I am well pleased.”
Why was Jesus baptized? John’s baptism was one of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Did Jesus get baptized to identify with us? He is sinless, but we are not. Jesus was baptised at the outset of His ministry.
Luke uses two verses here that convey such deep meaning. Here is Jesus who comes from God to be among us common people and He is baptised. I love how Jesus’ baptism happens not only at a human level, but also at a heavenly level.
Part of what is happening at the heavenly level is prayer, which is such a powerful dynamic in the work of the Holy Spirit. I so love God’s approval of Jesus and the affection for Him as His child.
When we come to be baptized, we follow the example of Jesus and need to realize that God’s approval and affection rest upon us as well “You are my beloved child,” and our Father tells us, “and I am fully pleased with you!”
Wow – God invites ME to follow His Son and receive His blessing!! It’s amazing that we get to do something that was important to our Saviour!! Thank you God for the blessing I know you feel when I turn my heart towards you!
Dear Heavenly Father. Thank you for the gift of baptism. What a blessing it is to share in the same experience that your Son and my saviour did so many years ago. Thank you that it is more than a mere human event, but one in which your Spirit moves and one in which I can find my assurance of your approval and affection. Lord I choose to follow You. Amen
