1 Timothy 3:1 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.
Perhaps this was an actual “saying” in the early church.. who understood that to be a bishop, or “overseer”, of the faith, was to work really, really hard but at something beautifully and nobly good. Being a leader/pastor/bishop in the early church would have been like leading a frontier mission, new, adventurous, fraught with uncertainty and at times dangerous. No doubts as to why these people had to be equipped with steady characters and maturity of faith in Christ’s mission.
This verse spoke to me in two ways.. firstly as a reminder to pray for and praise God for the wonderful faithful leaders/pastors/overseers I have in my world and church home. It is hard and costly work today too. Secondly it spoke to me of the fact that I am a leader in my own home, and in some of my own circles and situations. And that desiring to be a better “leader” in these areas, in pursuit of Gods kingdom, is a great desire. A good and blessed “work”, to His glory.
Father, thank you so much for the men and women who have followed their call and desire to oversee my faith, to lead me and teach me and pastor me. Bless them and their good work, to Your glory. Help me to aspire to further your Kingdom in the places in which I oversee and lead and serve. My children, my work, my small group, my friends. Amen.
