Timothy is being instructed on some of the details of overseeing a group of Christians, some of the issues he will face. There is a strong emphasis on family, and taking responsibility for the needs and struggles in your own. This frees up the church to meet the needs (emotionally, financially) of those who have no one.
This reminds me that the practical frontier of our faith is often our own home and close circles. Who I am and how I behave in my closest circles speaks volumes about how surrendered under Christ’s Lordship I am. This challenges me to more actively serve and love those closest to me, whether they are in Christ or not. It speaks volumes to them, and grows integrity of faith in me. At home is often where we show fatigue and apathy and perhaps can lose some intention towards others.
Father thank you for families, with all the ups and downs of living so close to other sinners, and all the lessons I have learnt about myself and You in this closest of circles. Sometimes I forget to give the best of my generosity, love and service especially when I am busy in serving further afield. Remind me to reflect You closest to home as well. Amen.
