1 Timothy 6:11-12
But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life…
Paul is wrapping up this letter with a petition to Timothy to guard his faith. He’s instructed him on church matters and money and prayer, and things and people to avoid. But the language is strong.. the call to follow Jesus is yes!, a life under grace and mercy and practicing love, but it is also a lifetime of fleeing, pursuing and fighting. To flee from temptation, greed and the company of those who would mock God or distort the gospel or love idle babbling. To pursue godliness and faithfulness and the fruits of being filled with the Spirit. To fight the good fight of faith, with eyes on eternity.
The Christian life is not an apathetic one, although I am still learning the rest and peace that comes from sitting under the yoke of Jesus. It is active and with some missional urgency. It should not be an anxious one, because we know who is Sovereign, although I have definitely struggled with being overwhelmed. It is a life of guarding and growing my faith, of doing good works, not to win my salvation but because of my salvation and relationship with my Father.
Father thank you that you see all the facets of my faith journey thus far: the things and people that have brought me closer to you, and those that have distracted me from godliness, the Kingdom, and eternity. Help me Lord to actively guard my faith in you, and to pursue your heart for me and the world. Help me when I become overwhelmed. Amen.
