Missions Update

Update from our Missions Partner in Cambodia – Byron Davis

Dear Newlife,

It was nice to be able to see you and speak at church last December.

Since arriving back in Cambodia, life has been busy and full. Below is a short update about Blessed Hope Centre, which Newlife and many of you have been supporting.

Blessed Hope is in a small rural village, close to the border city of Poipet where we built a centre for the local children to come to study and learn English. A friend of mine and fellow missionary, Teacher Jen, runs the centre during the week and a church service on Sunday along with two other teachers.

I recently started construction on a two bedroom house on the property, where Jen and one of the teachers can soon live and help care for the property. I look forward to finishing this house and continuing to see this centre grow into a community education centre.

Please be praying for one of our students. In November last year, she contracted TB and Meningitis. After going from hospital to hospital, we finally brought her to the capital city Phnom Pehn for treatment and so far she’s spent more than four months on her road to recovery. We are trying to support this family as much as possible with medical treatment and making her life more comfortable. Every time she sees me she cries because after all these months in a concrete wall hospital room, she just wants to go back to school. I wish I could just make everything okay, but sometimes life is not that easy.

About once a week, I am bringing someone to the hospital to get some type of treatment. About once a month, the backseat of my car unfortunately becomes an ambulance.

One thing for sure is that helping provide these children with an education, will give them a chance to break the cycle of poverty and empower them to become the leaders of the next generation that God created them to be.

Thanks so much for all your prayers and support. If you would like to know more about my ministry here in Cambodia or receive my newsletters, please direct message me over Facebook.

God Bless,

Byron Davis

Child Sponsorship Opportunity: Extreme poverty is a reality for many children in Cambodia, however we believe hope in Jesus is more powerful than poverty. There are currently two children in our program who need immediate sponsorship so they can continue in their school studies and be provided with basic necessities. It is only $58 per month. If you would like to respond or find out more, please contact Lana Hartwig: [email protected]. Thank you!

Newlife Care | December 2019

Dear Newlife Family,

The month of December and the Advent Season have both started and the Newlife Care Christmas Project is in full swing.

We have packed the 550 hampers of Christmas food and some of the approximately 4,000 gifts to be delivered, with prayers and love.
The first of the hampers and gifts have been collected and will be delivered to families in need in the lead up to Christmas.
The generosity of our Newlife Family continues to be a blessing to those doing it tough in our local community. This year you have sponsored more than 600 hampers … THANK YOU!!

The surplus funds from the Christmas Hamper Appeal will be used to purchase additional gifts and to support the Newlife Care Emergency Food Service throughout 2020.

To you and your families, have a wonderful and blessed Christmas.

2020 – Newlife Church Robina 4 Greenwich Court Robina 4226

One of our specialised small group programs is Bethel, which has been running for many years at Newlife.
Over two years Bethel provides a wonderfully in-depth overview of the entire bible.

Bethel does not require any previous biblical knowledge.
Amongst other things it teaches an overview of God’s plan for His creation, the aim of individual books, the history of biblical times, how the Old and New Testaments relate and how relevant Scripture is to our 21st century lives.

Kicking off in February, Bethel will cover the New Testament in 2020.

There are two meeting time options:

Monday mornings from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
and
Tuesday evenings 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

For further information & to register your interest, select a ticket and complete the form as prompted and Val Harvey will be in contact with you soon

or phone Val on 0434 994 190.

Student Sponsorship

Newlife Missions: Poipet, Cambodia

Tertiary educated people can help transform communities, but we need your help to see this happen in Cambodia. We are hoping to find some new sponsors to support a couple of our recently graduated high school students who have been accepted into university.

By way of background, university classes in Cambodia take place on the weekends and the sponsored university students will find work on weekdays to also help towards covering the costs associated with their university studies. The income they receive, though, does not completely cover their university costs (and travel), not to mention other adult life costs they may now encounter. Additionally, their parents are not really in a position to financially support their studies – in fact the students may face the expectation that they must contribute some of their income to their families, even while studying at university.

University student sponsorship helps to cover a portion of their university fees and their travel to university (which is one hour away by bus). The cost for the 2019/20 university year is $100/month (or $1,200/year). While it is our preference that sponsors cover this full amount, we are very happy to facilitate shared sponsorship where you and another sponsor contribute half of this amount each. If you decide to commit to any level of financial support, we ask that you do so for the whole of the student’s University degree (an estimated three-four years). We ask a similar commitment of the student too – he and his parents or guardian will sign a declaration to show their commitment to his studies, as is the case during primary and secondary schooling.

If you have any questions about university student sponsorship, or would like to begin sponsoring one of our university students in Cambodia, please contact Lana via email ([email protected]) or phone (0405 450 453).
