Colossians 2:6-8 (ESV)
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits[a] of the world, and not according to Christ.
Paul never backs down on the importance of Jesus being the center of it all. I love how he describes the Christian life in walking with Christ, rooted and built up in him. He is concerned that Christians will be led astray by other idols including human tradition, self-worship etc.
This is actually a great challenge for me as a Christian. How do I keep my attention and affection on Christ when so much around me is trying to get me to return my attention and affections back onto other things? I think part of the answer lies in verse 6: ‘Walk in him’. Am I daily spending time in his word, in prayer, in worship taking my eyes off my own life and setting my heart onto him.
Lord Jesus, there is no one like you. No one comes close! The heavens and the earth declare your glory. For you formed the mountains and the sea. Put a new song in our mouths of praise to God that many will see and believe. And may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, “Great is the Lord!”
