Ephesians 4:29 – “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as it fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
This verse occurs in a passage where Paul is talking to the believers in Ephesus about the new life that God has called them to, now that He has purified them, accepted them and included them into His family. All speech has the potential to build up, or to cut down, so it makes sense for it to be included in such a passage.
As Christians, we are called to live differently, and the words that we choose to use are included in that. How can we decide to use our words to encourage, build up, teach, and grow one another, rather than just cutting people down? Our speech should be focussed on building others up and bringing joy “as it fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
Lord, help my words to bless rather than to destroy. Help me to be a Christian who loves others and builds them up with my words. Holy Spirit helps me. Help me to find the right words to provide the encouragement that your people need. Amen.
