Luke 4: 1-2
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted[a] by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit led Him into the desert. Just as Jesus overcame temptation and the devil by His commitment to honour God and by His knowledge of Scripture we also see that the Holy Spirit empowered and led Jesus through these trials. (greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world!)
There is a saying ‘the devil is in all the details’. This is true, it is even more true that the devil tries to compromise anyone led by the Spirit. This is especially true early in a person’s commitment. If the devil can derail the early passion and drive of a new Christian when the presence of the Spirit is new and fresh, then he doesn’t have to keep coming back to try to derail that believer.
As disciples who desire to be more like Jesus we must follow His path to victory over the devil through the power of the Holy Spirit living in us.
Dear Heavenly Father
“I’m no longer a slave to fear, I am a child of God.” As your child I know your Spirit lives in me. Please empower me by your Spirit and help me resist the temptations of the Devil and to triumph over his attempts to dilute and to divert my loyalty and whole-hearted devotion to you. It’s in your name, Jesus, that I pray. Amen
