28 ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’
For the first time in reading this I recognise how what Jesus is saying here is tied to the previous verses. Jesus is the direct incarnation of the father’s character, so to know God the Father all we have to do is come to God the Son. Throughout the Old Testament the Israelite people had only known God through the rituals, laws, scriptures, rules and divine interventions. Now God the Son stands in front of them and says ‘Come to me,’….come know the character of the father, you will see his heart is not to burden you with religion but to carry the burden for you. To do the work with you. To invite you into the kingdom and the family. Come….for the first time in Jewish history and I will give you rest.
How often do I come to Jesus as a way to commune with the fullness of God. His character, nature and incarnated being. Jesus, through revelation of the Holy Spirit, reveals to us the character and nature of God the Father. Showing that he can be trusted, He is faithful, He is merciful, He is just. He wants to carry our burdens. What am I currently carrying that God never asked me to bear the weight of on my own?
God, thank you for sending your Son Jesus that we might know you and your character. Thankyou for revealing to us your heart in and through Jesus. Thank you for carrying the weight and burden of my salvation that I might know life and life to the full. Amen
