This is a famous verse that captures an idea that runs through the bible. We are on a journey, but we are not alone. Ours is not a distant God, in fact it is quite the opposite; He is with us every step of the way. This is beautifully summed up in Psalm 139.

“O lord you have searched me and known me

You know when I sit down and when I rise up

You discern my thoughts from afar

You search out my path and my lying down

You are acquainted with all my ways

Even before a word is on my tongue

Behold, O Lord, you know it altogether”

Unlike any other world faith, our God is very, very close. But there’s even more intimacy- He is not only with us, he is in us:

“Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching, My father will love them and we will come to them and make our home with them” John 14.23

Sometimes we feel alone. Sometimes God may seem distant. But our emotions do not trump what is actually the case-

“For I know the plans, I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” –Jeremiah 29.11

This verse is given to the Israelites as the exile is ending, a terrible episode in Israel’s history. Troubles will come….

“But nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen

Nobody knows it but Jesus” Louis Armstrong sings.

Yes, there is trouble, but we can shelter under the “shadow of his wings” writes David (Psalm 17.8)

We are on a journey, sometimes hard, but he never leaves us, until at last:

“To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy” Jude 1.24

Help me to remember Lord that I am never alone. Even when things are tough, you are right there with me, closer than I can imagine. You know my path already. You have plans for me and will not let me stumble. Thank you Lord.
