Contrary to popular depiction, angels are always described as being mighty, radiant, powerful beings. Whilst some of Revelation creates imagery to aid our thinking and understanding, angels are not imaginary, but very real. But the realms of darkness are equally as real, and these agents subvert the truth and the truth of angels is attacked too. Whilst it is easy for children to believe in angels, we can be enticed by our “sophistication”. And so angels are rendered helpless infants in Greek or Raphaelite art and popular culture, sanitized and sterilized and designated fantastical. We could easily be mocked for our belief in angels.

But angels are real. We see mighty angels delivering judgement to Sodom and Gomorrah, the plague of death in Egypt. But we also see

  1. their protection; “For he will command his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways” Psalm 91.11
  2. rejoice over salvations “there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents” Luke 15.10
  3. help us; “ ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation. Heb 1.14

Whilst our difficulties may seem overwhelming at times, it should act as some comfort to realise there are mighty angelic beings on our side. Of course this side of eternity, we can’t see these things, we can exercise our faith in the verses above and know we are not alone. We are given the Holy Spirit, the gift of prayer and fellowship with Him, the gift of fellowship in the church and are surrounded by a crowd of witnesses (Hebrews 12). So we can go into this day with confidence knowing we are not alone.

Pray//

Thank you Lord we are not alone, but are one of millions who believe. We pray to exercise our faith in humility even as the world may mock us. For your glory Lord.

Amen
