“And a great sign appeared in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars” v1
Things are heating up now in Revelation! The battle is now in full swing, the powers of light and darkness in unrestrained conflict at the end of time.
Most commentators believe the woman is Israel, for example the crown of twelve stars recalls Josephs dream in Genesis 37. She gives birth to a male child, “one who is to rule all nations”, ie Jesus, and the red dragon attempts to destroy this child.
Many interpret this as the multiple attempts through history to destroy Israel via Pharoah, Haman, Herod or Hitler, all of which are thwarted.
Here, in Revelation 12, the Red Dragon, Satan is finally defeated,
“war rose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon” v7
“And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world” v9.
“the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God” v 10
It is interesting that Satan is described as being
- A deceiver, one who leads astray into error
- An accuser, one who charges with offense
When Satan tempted Jesus, this is exactly what he did, tried to deceive and accuse Jesus, using twisted scripture and deceptive arguments. The way Jesus defeated Satan was by knowing and using the Scriptures with truth and power.
And so when we doubt, when our faith is under fire, when storms are raging, it is to the Word hidden in our hearts and minds we are to find refuge and hope. More than ever today, the Bible is under hostile attack, does it really say….? Of course, this requires wisdom and humility and the Holy Spirit revealing to us the truth. But never let us neglect our most powerful weapon, the living and active Word of God.
May “I hide your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119.11)
