9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained.10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” 11 Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[a] were killed just as they had been.
This was a powerful depiction of the martyrs at the end of days. Those who had been persectured for the faith. What was most powerful was the line where it says that they had maintaind the testimony and faithfulness to the word of God. Despite the persecution and trial, what was held as honour to their name was not the size of their ministry or the number of conversions. But rather the perseverance of their faith.
Perseverance is critical to salvation. As Christians, we forget that the sign of salvation is perseverance til the end. Often we can get discouraged, disheartened and downtrodden. However, it is critical that we remember and draw courage from not only those people being martyred right now, but mainly our saviour who persevered to the end and finished His race.
Jesus, grant me your strength to persevere and maintain the path you have for me til the end. Amen
